In addition, long-term studies require something called a regression analysis that quantifies variables known to influence aging of the skin.  The variables that would need factored out of the research study include  ⦁ smoking ⦁ diet, genetics  ⦁ extent of sun exposure  ⦁ products applied to the skin  ⦁ weight loss or weight gain  ⦁ water consumption ⦁ sleep habits  ⦁ any other cosmetic procedures  RESEARCH STUDY CONDUCTED claiming that Facial Exercises Help Middle-Aged Women Appear More Youthful   I do NOT think it\'s credible and here\'s why: Out of 27 participants only 16 did the exercises for the duration of the study The way they measured the results was by 2 dermatologists coming in and looking at pictures taken before the study and at the end of the study of the remaining 16 who actually completed it.  They made a determination of efficacy based on their OPINIONS of the physical appearance  of the participants based on photos.  NOT a measurement of muscle growth or skin elasticity!  In my opinion, it\'s not a reliable study because A. There were not enough participants B. They didn\'t control for other variable that may play a role in a middle aged woman\'s appearance C. Lack of muscle tone is NOT what causes skin to wrinkle and sag.  In addition, exercising your facial musles through repitious movement can, may minimally tone the muscle, but will definitely accelerate the aging the process when it comes to the condition of the overlying skin.   So, even if you tone those muscles, it\'s not going to help you to look younger, will actually help you to look older faster.  Our skin has a finite number of times that it can be stretched, flexed and contracted before it looses it\'s elasticity and no longer bounces back.  When we create expressions repititiously, in doing so we break the collagen and cause the elastic fibers to fail prematurely, and your skin will lose it\'s elacitcity and it will wrinkle, sag and stretch sooner.  In fact, facial treatments such as Botox  work to weaken facial muscles because facial contractions cause lines.  All dermatologists whose websites I visited seem to agree that the reason we start to look old is because of: ⦁ Volume Loss ⦁ Loss of Collagen and Elasticity (due to the natural aging process, but also as a result of repetitious facial expressions) ( Flexing and Contracting our muscles which is the BASIS of all facial exercises) ⦁ Textual changes and Discoloration ⦁ Bone and Hormone loss ⦁ Poor nutrition and lack of exercise ⦁ Excessive Sun exposure  In addition most of them seem to agree that botox is one of the most effective procedures to help prolong the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles, as well as reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles that have already been developed by paralyzing the muscles so that we can\'t flex and contract those muscles.
